John Poulson Sims

john sims
Our beloved John was born to Phyllis and Nymphus Sims in Salt Lake City, UT, the youngest of three children: his older sister Sheryl Brown and brother Scott. In his early years in Utah, John developed a kinship with his siblings as they skied the state's coveted slopes and listened to their favorite music. John's childhood was rooted in Orange County. In his youth, his sense of humor developed hastily, even as a young boy, he could bring a room to hysterical laughter. As he grew, he and his friends could be seen skateboarding the quiet streets of Orange and gracing basketball courts with their impressions of their NBA heroes. John attended Cal State Fullerton majoring in CIS, earning his Bachelor's Degree while working at Hughes Aircraft. His career opened the whole world to him, allowing him to travel to every corner, both on business and with dearest friends and family. John was a natural leader who led by example. His colleagues described him as a gentle giant with integrity, honesty, and charming humor. To put it simply, a lovely chap. With his professional life secured, John began his greatest venture by marrying his sweetheart, Lisa, on July 31, 1982. Their love laid the foundation for a family that brought John tremendous fulfillment. Over the years the family grew, starting with Lauren, followed by Ryan, Michael, and Kyle. Together, John's favorite team, enjoyed countless memories across the globe. From the majesty of Mt. Whistler to the pristine waters of the Phi Phi Islands, John loved having his family around him. They were his favorite audience and his favorite show. He loved being a father and adored being a grandfather. He never shied from babysitting duty and recording hours of memories on his phone. He provided an ideal example for how to love, how to cherish life, and how to face every problem with courage and confidence. His children believe John's example to be his greatest legacy and will carry it on so that others may feel the warmth and joy that characterizes John's soul. John grew to be a man of faith. He supported and respected the Catholic religion. John wanted to live a full life and even towards the end, he wanted to fight to stay with us. He eventually surrendered to God's will and trusted in His plan.

  1. Beautiful sentiments Jan, thank you!! John certainly enjoyed his summer trips to Idaho!! As a family of 4, we had such adventurous fun with you in Colorado!! And you’ll be happy to know, just like his dad, John & his boys are true Bronco fans!! Something special handed down from his dad:heart::heart:

  3. It was a blessing having John as a stepson. Even after his Dad died, dear Lisa kept me posted with all the family adventures, pictures every Christmas, birth announcements and pictures and occasional notes as their dear family grew.
My love and sympathy go out to his and Lisa’s dear family as well as to Sheryl and Scott and their families.
