Raymond Hackbarth

September 24, 1947 ~ February 22, 2023
Raymond William Hackbarth Jr. (Ray), was born on September 24, 1947 in Syracuse, New York to Jane
Hackbarth and Raymond William, Sr, and was the apple of their eyes.
Ray had just entered law school in Syracuse when he was drafted into the Army and destined for Viet
Nam; rather than attempt to defer service, Ray relished the opportunity to leave Syracuse and
experience the military and the world beyond New York. When the war was over, he re-enrolled in law
school and ultimately passed the New York Bar examination. While others might have chosen to remain
at the prestigious law firm where his father was a partner, Raymond wanted to make his own mark and
struck out on his own, ultimately settling on California, where he felt the “sun always shined.” He was
successful in every endeavor, from developing apartment units, to marketing and the California Bar
examination.
In 2013, Ray determined to re-invent himself and moved to Fallbrook, California, and into a home he
loved and which never ceased to energize him. Ray was intrigued by wildlife and nature and found
immense pleasure in the mundanities of life on his acreage. He also found Judith and her daughter
Rhonda that year, and the “threesome” enjoyed every day together thereafter. Raymond was a mentor,
a champion and a father to Rhonda and his patience was infinite. In 2020, King, Ray’s devoted German
Shephard, joined the trio and the family was complete. King adored Ray and was the source of endless
pleasure and slobbering kisses.
Ray was a developer, a contractor, a lawyer and an entrepreneur. He was also a man of incalculable
integrity and honor. He never lost his enthusiasm, his curiosity, nor his gusto for life, and was always
looking for the next challenge up to the day he suddenly and unexpectedly passed. Words are truly
inadequate to calculate his loss to those who loved him.
Rest in peace, beloved.

Sad news greets me this morning when I learn of the passing of Ray. My deepest condolences to his family. We were classmates at Westhill, class of ’65. Not surprised to read of Ray’s integrity and successes. While it’s a time of sadness and reality, I am smiling reflecting back many, many years. Peace.
