Renaldo Bantugon Catanag
June 3, 1946 ~ October 6, 2025
Renaldo Bantugon Catañag (1946 – 2025) was born and raised in the Philippine province of Batangas. His mother, Gloria Bantugon Catañag, taught English, while his father, Lorenzo Marasigan Catañag, taught Math and served as the head principal of the school that he and his older brother, Rolando, attended. While studying Electrical Engineering, he met his wife of 54 years, Soledad Cunanan Catañag, at the Mapúa Institute of Technology in Metro Manila, which they jokingly refer to as “the MIT of the Philippines”. In Muntinlupa, Manila, they raised their family of four children: Racquel Jane Lazo, Roselyn Ivy Remoreras, Rosanna Marie Darilay, and Raymond Catañag. Renaldo joined the ranks of millions of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs), using his degree to work as an engineer overseas in Saudi Arabia and Brunei. In foreign lands, he earned a livelihood for his family, occasionally bringing them along on memorable and exciting trips.
In 2003, he migrated with Soledad and Raymond to live with Racquel, her husband Edilberto, and their three children in Temecula, California. For 17 years, he worked as an instrumentation technician at McCrometer in Hemet, which he earnestly enjoyed. After retiring, he would fondly reminisce about his time at McCrometer as his great “love,” where each workday was like a day at the “playground”. Renaldo cherished his grandchildren, whom lovingly call him “Papa Ren”– Shanika Renee “Nikka” Lazo, Ria Ainsley Lazo, Edilyn Marie Lazo, Ignacio Glenn Remoreras, Lorenzo “Enzo” Remoreras, Izaiah Catañag, Jeziah Catañag, and Amelia “Millie” Grae Darilay.
Renaldo was a brilliant and resourceful engineer with a great love for tinkering, collecting gadgets, and gardening and nature. He had a silly sense of humor, often amusing himself with his own jokes. He would laugh along when his children and grandchildren would tease him. Renaldo was fiercely loyal to those he loved and trusted. When he formed an opinion, he was unshakably steadfast in his views. He could draw with great precision and detail, wrote with elegant penmanship, and took film photographs with technical savvy and a keen eye. Renaldo took great pride in his family’s intelligence, artistry, practical mindset, and passions– much of which they learned and inherited from him. He wanted to leave with the reassurance that he had lived a happy life because of his “beautiful family.” One of his parting words was “No more sorrow!”
