Rosario Mariano Bretting

Rosario (Rose) Bretting, age 71, passed away peacefully August 5, 2020 after a courageous 2 year battle with cancer. She was born June 10, 1949 in Toto, Guam to Nicolas and Rosario (Aquino) Cruz Mariano. She was married to Dennis James Bretting on October 11, 1974 while in the Air Force and stationed in Germany. Rose loved to travel and experience new places. She moved from Guam to California soon after graduating from high school, and with guidance from her Uncle Dee and Auntie Mamie, joined the Air Force in 1969. She proudly served on active duty for about 5 1⁄2 years. She and her husband then lived in Texas for about 12 years, where their son Wesley and daughter Kimberly were born, and where she worked various jobs at Fort Sam Houston and Randolph AFB. The family moved to Colorado in 1987 and lived in the Denver metro area for 30 years, where she faithfully cared for her husband and raised her two children. Together with her husband and daughter Kimberly and family, she moved to Guam in June of 2017. After spending two years in Guam with her siblings and extended family, she relocated to Winchester, California in June of 2019. Rose also loved her family. Nothing would make her happier than to celebrate Thanksgiving or Easter with family, or to shop for clothes for her children or grandchildren. She demonstrated her Christian faith by loving God with all her heart and loving her neighbor as herself. Rose is survived by her husband, Dennis Bretting; her son Wesley; her daughter and spouse Kimberly and Jose Menchaca; her brothers, sisters, and spouses: Frank and Mary Q. Mariano, Anthony C. and Lucille Mariano, Anita Mariano Mitchell, and Mary Mariano Damian; grandchildren Blake Bretting, Ceana Menchaca, and Gabriel Menchaca; plus her many nephews and nieces. All of these she loved and touched deeply. Burial with a small service for family will be held at Riverside National Cemetery on August 18, 2020. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or a charity of your choice.

  1. Al, thank you so much for your touching tribute! Yes, Rose loved her family dearly and brought joy to many. We cherish many memories of gatherings with you and your family in Colorado, from the time you moved there from Washington State, until the time we moved to Guam. You have always been there for us to encourage and support us when we needed it, and we thank you for that! We miss Rose dearly, but look forward to spending eternity with her, you, and all believers in heaven. May God bless you and your family!

  2. Dennis, you and your family continue to be in our thoughts and prayers. Rose was a very special sister-in-law; a very thoughtful woman, fantastic hostess, loving wife, mother and grandmother. We know that she will be missed by her family, but it’s wonderful that you all will be sustained by your faith, and that her faith helped her through her life, and especially the last couple years.

Virtual hugs, and we love you!
    Tim and Gloria

  3. Keith, thank you so much for your thoughtful tribute to Rose! I’m thankful we have maintained contact with each other since 1974 and cherish the memories of visits together in Omaha, Pennsylvania, and Colorado. Thanks for your continuing support, and may God bless you! Dennis Bretting

  4. My condolences to you, Dennis and family of the loss of my dear cousin, Ling. I am so saddened to hear of the news, especially after we had just reunited five years ago when both you, Dennis, and Ling surprised me at my front doorsteps while visiting the San Francisco Bay Area. I was so touched that she looked me up, thank goodness I hadn’t moved after 45 years in the same house. It was just like Ling to want to connect with family… Lots of fond memories growing up together in Guam.

My heart goes out to you, Dennis, and the children during this most difficult time. Take care.

    Love,
    Linda Mariano Avilla

  5. Our Beloved and Beautiful Auntie Ling/Rose Bretting, may she Rest In Peace with our Father in heaven. You will be deeply missed by all the lives that you have touched and impacted. Your love for family and friends will be cherished forever. Thank you for you and your kind heart and generous self that we have all had the privilege to enjoy on the receiving end. Your sassy ness and sense of humor always brought smiles to those around you. Your smile always brighten the room that you entered. Thank you for you and for all that you have done for us. You were always there when we needed you and you never gave way to put your needs above others. You were like a second mom to us and to our children. It’s difficult at times to image that you are no longer here with us in flesh, but we know that your spirit will be watching over us and you will be free from any and all suffering. We will hang on to and cherish all the wonderful memories that we have created together.
We love you with all our hearts.

  6. Rose Bretting, a special lady that I have known since 1974. She was a single Air Force Sgt in Germany when I met her roommate, Angie Salinas, whom I shortly married and Rose and Dennis married shortly after that. Rose had a quality about her that radiated confidence and goodness. We continued to keep in touch even when we did not live near each other. Dennis and Rose left the Air Force and became civilians, a role that fit them well. They moved to Colorado so Dennis could work with the military accounting office. There they had the great pleasure of welcoming a granddaughter into the world and Rose and Dennis could not do enough for her. Rose was an example to her granddaughter and to everyone that she came in contact with on how to live a wholesome God loving life.

Rose always set the bar high for others to look up to and follow. She didn’t do it intentionally; she just did her thing and you looked up to her for it. She always had a good word for everyone she met.

She was a great friend and spiritual leader without even trying. She was probably the most religious and down to earth person I knew. She didn’t get all preachy, but she just had an aura of spirituality that you could sense just being near her.

Rose Bretting was the most wonderful person I have ever known, she will surely be missed by hundreds if not more.

I love you Rose, I will miss forever.

    Keith
