Ollie Herzberg, active volunteer, avid golfer and retired public servant, died Jan. 1st in LaJolla, CA, from complications of lung cancer. The Murrieta, CA, resident was 69.Born in Chestertown, Md., June 30, 1941, Ollie was the only child of Ollie and Belle Herzberg. He married Maureen Ayres in Rego Park, N.Y., Feb. 8, 1964, and they raised one daughter, Colleen Mai, who is now married to Mike Richardson and lives in Corona with their two children, Ryan and Payton. If men are measured by their character, compassion and good works, Ollie was a giant. Ollie’s life of service included four years in the U.S. Navy, from 1960-64, and a career as a police officer in Chestertown, Md., a deputy sheriff in Kent County, Md., chief of police in Greensboro, Md., and a division fire chief for the Baltimore-Washington International Airport. He also volunteered as vice mayor of Greensboro and devoted 30 years to the Greensboro Volunteer Fire Company. He served one term as part of the traffic and safety commissioner for Murrieta and at the time of his death, worked as a logistics manager for the National Disaster Medical System, a calling that took him to such places as Ground Zero in NYC, and New Orleans in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Though a man of few words, Ollie was not above performing a good joke, singing in a gospel group or playing country or blue grass on his guitar. He enjoyed woodworking and gardening, and he loved his dogs, Jack and Gingers, and his golf. … a sport that generated a wide circle of friends. He was an inspirational father, a “nice, fun and loving” grandfather, and he was his wife’s best friend and sweetheart for nearly 47 years.A memorial service is planned for Saturday, February 12, 2011 at the Greensboro Baptist Church with burial following the service at Greensboro Cemetery in Greensboro, Maryland. Everyone is invited to the luncheon at Goldsborough Fire Company.
