Antony Hernandez
March 21, 1954 ~ April 7, 2023
Antony “Tony” Hernandez passed away peacefully at home on April 7, 2023. A resident of Temecula for 30 years, Tony was born in San Francisco, CA in 1954 to Rita Hernandez and the late Pascual Hernandez.
A standout football player, known as “la Pantera Negra”, Tony graduated from St Bernard’s High School in Playa Del Rey and went on to study at Santa Monica College. He commuted to Los Angeles County for 30 years, working at and eventually retiring from the Department of Public Works’ Building and Safety Division.
Tony had incredible comedic timing and a quick wit. A quiet man by nature, he often was the unexpected life of the party, thanks in part to his legendary storytelling and uncanny ability to recall even the smallest details.
He had a diverse knowledge of classic rock and American history. He enjoyed attending concerts and political events, and having hours-long conversations discussing music and current events.
He loved home improvement projects, travel, horse racing, and western movies. He was a proud Puerto Rican American. And he was a fantastic cook, developing much-loved recipes and techniques.
Above all he will be remembered for his unwavering loyalty to his family, friends, faith, and country.
For the past four years, Tony courageously battled Stage IV cancer. His wife Carol stood strong and cared for him throughout all his treatments, doctors appointments, and surgeries. Together for 42 years, they shared an unshakeable love that empowered them to remain resilient during the best and worst of times.
Mr. Hernandez is survived by his loving wife of 34 years, Carol, and their three children Richard, Christina, and Dominique. He attended every one of his kids’ games, performances, concerts, graduations, and events throughout the years. He will be forever remembered by them as the most loving, supportive, and inspiring father.
He is also survived by his mother, Rita Hernandez; brother, Michael Hernandez; 18 nieces and nephews; and countless life-long friends and colleagues. He was preceded in death by his father, Pascual, and sister, Yolanda Dowling.
A 4pm memorial service will be held on April 20, 2023 at The Bridge Church (38801 Calistoga Drive, Murrieta, CA), beginning with a 3pm viewing.
