Catherine Vassilakis
October 17, 1939 ~ October 3, 2024
It’s with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of our beautiful mother, Catherine.
Catherine was born on October 17, 1939 to Dan and Soteria Antonopoulos in Coatsville, Pennsylvania. She was their only child.
In 1962, my mother met my father, Evan on the Greek island of Tinos, where he was from. She was vacationing with her family. It was love at first sight and they were married for 61 years. During their marriage, they had three children. My mother was known for her unconditional love and support both to her family and community. She was a devout Christian and was part of the Philoptochos group for many, many years in the churches she was a member both in Pennsylvania and San Diego.
In June 1992, our whole family moved to San Diego. She loved the ocean and wanted to get away from the harsh winters she had experienced on the east coast. It just felt like home to her during my parent’s visits before the big move.
In my mother’s younger years, she was a stay- at-home mom, active in her church, and enjoyed walking everyday with our family dog. During the weekends, it was our time to spend with our family whether it was going to the zoo or going to Disneyland. She was there for every milestone, every birthday, and every event in her children’s lives. She was the epitome of a true mother in all of its meaning.
While our hearts mourn the loss, we take comfort in knowing she is no longer suffering and at peace with God.
Survived by: Evan Vassilakis (spouse), Jon Vassilakis (son), daughter-in-law Lauren Vassilakis, Maria Obenauer (daughter), son-in-law Kurt Obenauer, and Christina Vassilakis (daughter)
