Fred Hayes

fred hayes
Fred M. Hayes made his final flight west on April 8, 2012. He died peacefully at home with his family. Fred was born on July 6, 1937 in Brooklyn, New York, but spent most of his childhood in Mobile, Alabama. After graduating from McGill Institute in Mobile, Fred attended Mississippi Southern University in Hattisburg, MS. During his college stay Fred applied for and was accepted into the Air Force Aviation Cadet program. This was where he received his flight training that would form the basis for the rest of his life. Flying was his passion. After graduating from the Cadet program Fred was commissioned in the US Air Force where he served as a B-47 pilot. After an honorable discharge from the Air Force Fred spent one year in the US Coast Guard flying search and rescue in seaplanes. Fred was hired as a pilot by United Airlines June 30, 1964. He flew for United 33 years, retiring July 1, 1997. Fred continued flying his Baron in general aviation after retirement. Fred also had a passion for woodworking. He was generally found in his workshop on his days off. He was a self-taught woodworker but his talent ranged from construction building to cabinet making to furniture artist to toymaker. For Fred, family was very important. He was a fine husband and a very loving father and grandfather. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Bonnie; his daughter Marie; his son Roger; and four grandchildren. Fred always had a wacky sense of humor and loved to make people laugh or lighten the mood. Everyone who knew him well has lots of stories of the antics he pulled, all in good fun. Fred will be remembered and missed by all.

  1. CORRECTION TO EARLIER GUESTBOOK ENTRY: INADVERTENTLY, I CONFUSED THE ATTEMPT WHICH GRANITE CONSTRUCTION COMPANY, INC., MADE UPON FRED BARTZ, WITH FRED M. HAYES. MY APOLOGIES. HOWEVER, ALL OF MY REMARKS ABOUT FRED M. HAYES IN MY EARLIER ENTRY STILL REMAIN TRUE. A MASS WILL BE SAID FOR THE REPOSE OF FRED’S SOUL AT THE MISSION SANTA YSABEL, IN THE VERY BEUTIFUL AND WINDSWEPT BACK COUNTRY OF SAN DIEGO COUNTY. SAILPLANES ARE FREQUENTLY IN THE AIR, RIDING THE THERMALS…A SIGHT WHICH FRED WOULD HAVE LOVED. THE MASS WILL BE CELEBRATED BY FATHER CECILIO MORAGA, THE PRIEST IN CHARGE OF MISSION SANTA YSABEL, AND A WONDERFUL PASTOR AND INDIVIDUAL. AGAIN: FRED, REST IN PEACE. JOSEPH B. HUDSON, JR., ESQ. FALLBROOK

  2. Fred was a dear friend, and in many ways a mentor! I met Fred when he was president of our POA and he convinced me to take a position on the board. It was necessary to seek guidance from him on many occcassions. It was a delight to fly with him when he had a spare seat in his aircraft. I will miss him and his wonderful sense of humor greatly.

  3. Fred was a tireless advocate for Temecula and DeLuz residents. His larger than life demeanor and sense of humor will be missed.

  4. Fred will be missed for many reasons but what I will miss most was his caring spirit. I really enjoyed getting to know him and his wife, Bonnie, through the work of Save Our Southwest Hills.

  5. Good Bye Dad, though I did not know you so well, I hope you rest in peace. You left behind some wonderful people in California, that I know will miss you very much. I am sorry you, myself, and my 2 brothers (John, and Keith) will not get to know one another in this life, but, I am sure we will some time. I think of you still, and again, I forgive you. Your Son, Fred M. Hayes 111.

  6. TO THE MEMORY OF FRED M. HAYES: Fred exemplified what Ernest Hemingway used to call “Grace Under Pressure.” He was unflappable, always calm, and always in possession of both the pertinent facts at hand, and of lucid presentation. “Dependability” was his watchwork characteristic. Perhaps the highest tribute in recent times was the fact that Granite Construction Company, Inc….seing his ability in opposing their truly destructive cause…attempted to hire him, and to “lure him onto their payroll” and thereby silence him with money. Of course, he refused, being a man of principle. God rest him, “Per Nunc et per Semper.” Joseph B. Hudson, Jr., Esq. Fallbrook, California
