Robert R. 'Bob' Mitchell

robert mitchell
On May 13th, 2015, we lost a wonderful father, husband and friend. Robert R. Mitchell, age 86, of Temecula, California passed away after valiantly fighting the battle of Parkinson’s for over a decade. Robert started out his life in Kansas, growing up in Emporia and graduating with dual degrees from the University of Kansas. He was a steadfast Jayhawks fan, flying a Jayhawks banner and joyfully chanting “Rock Chalk Jayhawk” while watching their basketball games. After graduating from college, Robert served this country as a Sergeant in the Army, Counter Intelligence Service unit during which he was awarded the Good Conduct Medal and the National Defense Service award. After being discharged from military service he began his career in Public Administration. Robert was passionate about civic development, community service and building better cities and tomorrows, achieving many milestones in his career. His life-long dedication to civic development left enduring accomplishments still seen today in many cities and in multitudes of younger public administrators whom he helped educate and mentor. One example is the City of Hope. Believing in hope, Robert, as the City Manager in Duarte, California, was instrumental in the establishment of the City of Hope. He worked to set aside land and raise funds dedicated to building the facility which is now the epicenter of cancer research in the world. His family finds some comfort and pride in knowing his life-long work, passion and expertise remain and continue to touch and help many communities every day. Robert had many hobbies and interests. He was an avid collector of Wedgwood, loved orchids, Packards, Studebakers and history. He was a member of Rotary and a 33rd degree Mason. Robert is survived by his wife Lois. Married for 61 years, Lois lovingly called him “my favorite boyfriend”. His four children Janice (Rick) Ludwig, Julia (Les) Anderson, Brian (Jana) Mitchell and Edith (John Vance) Mitchell survive him as well as many beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Robert cherished his family and the many friends he’d made along his path of life. Robert’s family is devastated by his passing but treasure the lives and memories he provided each of us. May he rest in eternal peace.

Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. Remembering this Christmas, Dad, how in your later years, with your full white beard, little ones would think you were Santa : ) I remember the twinkle in your eye and smile as you’d wave to them and tell them Merry Christmas! I think you’re helping Santa now, most likely with glee and a chuckle…thank you for all the memorable holidays we shared. Missing you and Mom deeply.

  2. What sad news we woke up to this morning Lois, Edie and family. Big Bob was such a wonderful big hearted and kind man. We took Grammy Louise to see him and Lois and the family this Christmas and even though his body was failing him, his mind was as sharp as a tack. I’m sure he’s up there with Buz’s dad Bob Morse who passed away last year, having fun talking about and driving around in those Packard’s. We will miss him dearly indeed. Please let us know what we can do to help. We live here in Temecula too. We will let Grammy Louise know today and we will be in attendance with my 81 year old mother on the 30th. She’s visiting for a couple of weeks and will be so sad to hear as well. Biggest hugs and love to you until then. Tracy, Robert, Grammy Louise and the kids ♡♡♡

  3. You will be missed by many. My deepest sympathy to all your family. For Edie, Mitch, John, and especially Lois special hugs and prayers.
