Ruby Sylvia Chavez of Murrieta CA , known to those who loved her as Sibby, passed away in her sleep on September 13, 2013. She was born on July 8, 1935 to Jess and Alice Hillenburg in La Puente, CA, the oldest of 5 siblings. She graduated from Puente Union High School in 1953. On January 17, 1954 she married Pvt. Antonio Chavez of El Monte, CA. They lived in Columbia, SC where he was stationed at that time. Over the next 5 years they had 3 children: Pamela Temple of West Covina, Dennis Chavez of West Covina, CA and Rebecca Brown of Port Orchard, WA. Upon his discharge, they lived in La Puente, Bishop, San Bernardino, and West Covina. In 1982 Tony's job assignment took them to Buenos Aires, Argentina. Upon their return to California they lived in Tiburon, San Juan Capistrano, and finally returned to West Covina. They were active at Mt. Calvary-Faith Lutheran Church in La Puente and Hope Lutheran for many years. Sibby was very involved with the East San Gabriel Valley Homeless Shelter, and served that mission with passion. Sibby’s self-declared purpose in life was to be a wife , mother and ' Grama', which she fulfilled with joy. She loved teaching people to cook and sew but her claim to fame was saving the LA Dodgers from mosquitos by selling cases of 'Skin so Soft' to them as an Avon Lady. Sibby is survived by her loving husband, Tony, her 2 sisters, Nola Carol Wilson of Big Bear, CA and Alice Kathleen Lovelady of La Verne, CA, her 3 children, 12 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, and countless friends. She touched innumerable lives, with her laughter and generous heart. Please join us in celebrating Sylvia’s life.
